Financial Accounting

Financial accountants prepare financial statements based on general ledgers and participate in important financial decisions involving mergers & acquisitions, benefits/ERISA planning and long-term financial projections. The work can be varied over time. One day you may be running spreadsheets. The next day you may be visiting a customer or supplier to set up a new account and discuss business. This work requires a good understanding of both accounting and finance.
Management Accounting

Management accountants work in companies and participate in decisions about capital budgeting and line of business analysis. Major functions include cost analysis, analysis of new contracts and participation in efforts to control expenses efficiently. This work often involves the analysis of the structure of organizations. Is responsibility to spend money in a company at the right level of our organization? Are goals and objectives to control costs being communicated effectively? Historically, many management accountants have been derided as "bean counters". This mentality has undergone major change as management accountants now often work side by side with marketing and finance to develop new business.
Audit

Work in audit involves checking accounting ledgers and financial statements within corporations and government. This work is becoming increasingly computerized and can rely on sophisticated random sampling methods. Audit is the bread and butter work of accounting. This work can involve significant travel and allows you to really understand how money is being made in the company that you are analyzing. It’s great background!
Budget Analysis

Budget analysts are responsible for developing and managing an organizations financial plans. There are plentiful jobs in this area in government and private industry. Besides quantitative skills many budget analyst jobs require good people skills because of negotiations involved in the work.
Tax Advisors

Tax accountants prepare corporate and personal income tax statements and formulate tax strategies involving issues such as financial choice, how to best treat a merger or acquisition, deferral of taxes, when to expense items and the like. This work requires a thorough understanding of economics and the tax code. Increasingly, large corporations are looking for persons with both an accounting and a legal background in tax. A person, for example, with a JD and an CPA would be especially desirable to many firms.

I m taking care of the accounting part in my current employment since the company start its operation.?

few years later the company employ my superior who has vast experience but not in the accounting.this lead to me have to trained her and she has to refer to me every now and then for any transaction.my boss told me i cannot lead the accounts dept because i have no leadership skills thats y they did not promote me instead they hire someone.prob is i m being paid less than her and i m not happy as every now and then she will refer to me.she is not capable to compile a set of accounts.i love my work but i m not happy.no promotion, poor pay, bg referred to by my superior.mayb i am not capable to lead.
i appreciate your suggestion and advise.

Totally understand. I was brought on in a supervisory capacity. But because this upset the persons who were here before me, my job was down graded. I have an AR clerk and an A/P clerk that have a higher status than I do. I’m the one with the education and experience, I find the problems, basically I clean up the crap. My boss is a spineless person who talks a good game, but when it comes down to it, he sides with the people that have been here longer. The company is a private one, so the owners treat the long timers with special preferences. If they are happy, then my boss is happy. It makes him look good.

When he has problems, then they are referred to me. I have to pick up his extra work; but only if it goes through him first. Hence the controlling of his exposure. As long as no one sees me in the background he is safe. Been her for 2 years and had no review or raise. Most people do not even know what I do, they assume that I am my bosses grunt and secretarial assistant.

This place is a complete and total joke. I have decided to not waste my time here trying to make a difference. I am going back to school to add to my educational diversity. When I am done I hope to have no 9-5 desk job.

Do yourself a favor and take a look at what it is you want and what steps you need to get there.

Good Luck.

where can i find an internship for the feield of accounting employment?

If you are currently in school, I would contact your Career Development Center and see what sort of programs they have set up with the different accounting firms. Usually colleges have recruiting events with the firms on campus. If these events have already occurred, they may even be able to provide you with individuals to contact directly.

Another option is to contact the accounting firms directly. Check their websites to see if they offer the option to apply online. The website may also have the email address or phone number of the Recruiting Manager for the local office that you would like to work at.

I would apply for internships at a few different firms.
