What is the best route to getting into a career in accounting from scratch?

I left school with my gcses but never pursued my education. im now a mother and would like to go back to studying and having a career. accounting interests me but im not sure what would be the best way to get into this.

Im the same as you. I started a college course 3 years ago and found I really liked accounts but accountancy firms wont usually take you on untill you have at least started a degree in the subject. Im currently just starting my second year at Uni doing a BA Accounts and Business. If you are on Family tax credits you will probably get your studying for free. If not you will get some help from ILA. Most Universities do evening courses like I am doing.
Good luck,

What is the best way to pursue an accounting career?

I’m at a 4 year college now, and have my first two years almost complete. Is there anything specific I should do, or just continue taking the classes that I need to complete my accounting degree?

Just take the courses but my suggestion is to divert to Banking & Finance as a better career path. The path for an Accountant is just too tough. In order to get CPA, you need many years of working experience in various industries. More importantly you don’t get high salaries for that.

But if you were to switch to Banking & Finance, you do half the work and get paid double the amount for working in a cosy office in a downtown posh office.

You decide.

Regards,

Edmund

What is a stronger career Accounting or Human Resources?

I was recently laid off from my HR job and thinking about getting into accounting? Which do you think is a safer bet during future recessions? Why do you think one career is better than another? Thanks.

I would go for the accounting. My mom is an accountant and thru thick or thin she always managed to find something to keep us afloat. She worked for a large corporation that specialized in hematology machines. After the death of the primary owner, the heirs decided they did not want the business and sold it to an even larger corporation that produced the chemicals needed in hematology – a marriage made in heaven for the chemical company. Needless to say they were based on the west coast, mom and i were on the east cost so her job ended after 27 years. She quickly found a position as a comptroller for a mom and pop business and from there many other opportunities presented themselves.
HR is lucrative – all companies could use an HR director, but in tough times like this they can be expendable. Who manages your $$$ should not be dismissed! food for thought

Tips for pursuing a career in business/as an accountant?

I’m in grade 11 and I am thinking of going into business or accounting. I was wondering what type of things do accountants do, how much do they get paid, is it a good job, what types of accountant are there and what is the step by step process of becoming an accountant in canada, starting in high school. I’m also very interested and good at managing money and salsaries and doing balance sheets and etc. What type of job opputunties or positions does that give me? Thanks very much for any help!

There are various careers that relate to accounting from accounting clerks, bookkeeping, payroll, certified chartered accounting, financial auditors, tax related jobs.. etc etc etc..

Take a grade 12 accounting course and determine if you enjoy it. It’s not for everyone. My first year accounting 101 university course had a drop rate of about 55%.

Adding/subtracting numbers is easy and the computer can do the work for you, but interpreting the financial activity is the challenge. Cheers!
